Subcommittees

The NGO Committee on Ageing NY encourages specialized areas of interest and advocacy within the broader topic of ageing and maintains several subcommittees which meet on a regular basis.

Our Sub Committees are listed below.

Global Alliances

The goal of the Subcommittee on Global Alliances is to expand global partnerships to promote advocacy to elevate issues of Older Persons in the work of the United Nations.

Responsibilities and Activities
  • Ensuring outreach to strategic potential partners to include UN agencies, Member States, Private Sector, Civil Society and Key Stakeholders.

  • Identifying potential speakers for NGO COA events.

  • Keeping abreast of UN activities by attending meetings to ensure that the NGO Committee on Ageing NY’s messaging is current.

  • Providing relevant information for inclusion on the NGO COA website.

Promote a Human Rights Convention for Older Persons

The goal of Subcommittee to Promote a Convention for the Human Rights of Older Persons is the adoption by the United Nations of a Convention to Protect and Promote the Rights of Older Persons. The Subcommittee works closely with the Global Alliance on the Rights of Older People (GAROP).

  • Monitoring ageing issues at the United Nations to keep abreast of latest developments, particularly with reference to efforts made at the national, regional and international level to develop a convention to protect the rights of older persons; 
  • Undertaking research as necessary to have available up-to-date data and information, particularly with respect to positions of Member States on rights of older persons; 
  • Studying and understanding earlier convention strategies;
  • Communicating and collaborating with helpful partners in order to prepare strategies, including drafting of position papers; 
  • Drafting and delivering statements at relevant meetings; 
  • Attending meetings at the United Nations and elsewhere on the subject matter and on any other issue that may have an impact on decision-making with respect to a convention; 
  • Organizing visits to Permanent Missions, in collaboration with the Subcommittee for Liaison with United Nations Permanent Missions, as and when necessary; 
  • Preparing and distributing standard information package to partners and to Permanent Missions; 
  • Keeping records of visits undertaken, including reports on visits, with name of delegates met; 
  • Collaborating with the United Nations Group of Friends of Older Persons; 
  • Collaborating with the Global Alliance for the Rights of Older Persons (GAROP)

Older Women

The goal of the Older Women Subcommittee is to advocate, educate, and promote the human rights, dignity, safety, and social inclusion of older women as valued and contributing members of their communities and the larger world. This work will be approached through an intersectional lens, recognizing and respecting the critical aspects of identity that include, at minimum, gender, age, culture, race, ethnicity, socioeconomics, ability, nationality.

The basis for its work includes the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, the Beijing Declaration and Platform of Action, the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

  • Identify opportunities within the UN, NGOs, and civil society to advocate on behalf of older women through event planning, participation, and the grooming of champions to advance information and understanding of issues and concerns relevant to older women. 

  • Build on efforts to formalize a synergistic relationship with the NGO Committee on the Status of Women to ensure that the voice of older women is heard and included. 

  • Develop opportunities to educate and work with intergenerational and mainstream UN groups and civil society in recognizing and understanding the necessity of including older women’s issues in their work. 

  • Remain updated with Member States’ positions on older women’s issues at national, regional and international levels. 

  • Provide commentary on pertinent documents/reports to ensure that issues and concerns of older women are included and addressed.

Intergenerational Program

The general goals of the Intergenerational Subcommittee are to collaborate with youth at the United Nations and civil society NGOs to foster better relations among the generations, to work together on addressing global issues with a focus on human rights and to change stereotypes of age. The overarching long-range goal is to enable youth to better prepare for their own future aging and join with the ageing community to advocate for human rights for people of all ages, including older people.

  • Develop a strategy on reaching out to youth at the UN and civil society, and how to engage them in a dialogue about human rights for all ages.

  • Identify, target, contact and maintain relationships with those entities within the UN and in civil society focused on youth with the goal of collaborating and partnering.

  • Advocate for an intergenerational approach to human rights by planning programs and events, participating on panels and making interventions at the UN and convenings.

Communications

The goal of the Communications Subcommittee is to develop a strategy for communicating Committee on Ageing activities and advocacy campaigns effectively and consistently to our various audiences across multiple media and platforms.

  • Crafting, tailoring and disseminating key messages that support the CoA’s primary advocacy goals

  • Identifying audiences that should receive these messages, including regular subscribers, active members, UN Permanent Missions, potential funders, other NGOs, and additional stakeholders who may be interested in international ageing issues. 

  • Engaging other NGOs and organizations to disseminate these messages and action calls through their own communication networks. 

  • Identifying additional channels for messaging.

Development

The goal of the Development Subcommittee is to raise funds to support the work of the NGO Committee on Ageing NY and its Subcommittees.

  • Developing and maintaining a list of prospective donors to be contacted

  • Preparing project proposals, in collaboration with other Subcommittees, for solicitation of funds, to be approved by the Executive Committee;

  • Preparing solicitation letters for signature by the Chair of the CoA;

  • Organizing fundraising events;

  • Providing relevant information for inclusion on the NGO CoA website.

Membership

The goal of the Membership Subcommittee is to increase the membership of the NGO Committee on Ageing NY with a focus on representatives of non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and to ensure that concerns of members are taken into account with respect to their membership.

  • Increasing the number of representatives of NGOs and their level of involvement. 

  • Providing, in collaboration with the mailing list manager, data and analysis of the status of membership and any follow-up communications.

  • Providing information on membership at program events, including sign-in sheets, application forms.

  • Collaborating with other Sub-Committees, where relevant, with respect to publicity, communications, outreach.
